Chinese vs Japanese Pokémon TCG sealed boxes: what's the difference?

If you collect sealed Pokémon TCG products from Asia, you will mostly see two kinds: Japanese and Simplified Chinese. They look similar on the shelf, but there are a few practical differences worth knowing before you buy.

Language and region

Japanese products are made for the Japanese market and carry Japanese text. Simplified Chinese products are made for the mainland China market and carry Simplified Chinese text. Neither is an English-language release, so check the language shown in the listing.

Set codes

Each market uses its own set codes. Our Japanese stock includes Storm Emeralda (M6). Our Simplified Chinese stock includes CSV10C (Chasing Glory Together) and CBB6C (Gem Pack Vol.6). Searching by set code is the quickest way to find the exact product you want.

Box formats

Formats vary by product, so always check the contents in the listing. As examples from our shop:

  • The Japanese Storm Emeralda booster box has 30 packs and 150 cards.
  • The Chinese CSV10C Chasing Glory Together slim booster box has 15 packs and 75 cards.
  • The Chinese Gem Pack Vol.6 slim booster box has 18 packs and 72 cards.

What to check before you buy

Look for the language, the set code, the contents (packs and cards), and whether the product is factory sealed. Some Japanese boxes are sold with shrink wrap and some without, and we say which in the title of the listing.
